What to Measure Before Launching a Digital Campaign

A simple measurement framework for conversions, diagnostic events, campaign parameters, data quality, and reporting limits.

Measurement should begin with the decision a campaign is expected to influence. Installing more tags does not create clarity if the team has not defined a valuable action, a diagnostic signal, or how lead quality will return to the marketing process.

Define the valuable action

A purchase, qualified inquiry, booked consultation, completed application, or activated account may be a primary outcome. Page views, scrolls, and button clicks can help diagnose the journey, but they should not automatically be treated as equal conversions.

Write a measurement specification

Document event names, trigger conditions, required properties, conversion status, source, ownership, validation method, consent requirements, and known limitations.

  • Primary outcomes and leading indicators
  • Required campaign parameters
  • Duplicate and error checks
  • CRM or sales feedback path
  • Reporting timezone and attribution context

Test the complete journey

Use representative devices and paths to test the ad or link, landing page, form or checkout, confirmation state, analytics event, advertising conversion, and lead destination. A tag firing is not enough if the data is duplicated or missing useful context.

Report decisions with limitations

Explain what changed, which signal supports it, how confident the team should be, and what test should happen next. Note attribution differences and data gaps instead of hiding them inside a polished dashboard.
